Amazon layoffs now expected to mount to 20,000, including top manager

Amazon will lay off up to 20,000 employees in the company's distribution centers, as well as technology staff and corporate executives.

This is about twice the number of people previously reported by Amazon as the cloud computing and retail giant has retrench after going on a hiring spree during pandemic.

Amazon employees range in rank from level 1 through level 7. Staff at all levels are likely to be affected,

according sources who have direct knowledge of the matter and requested anonymity. The New York Times reported that Amazon would implement mass layoffs in November.

Sources claimed that as many 10,000 people would be affected.

According to sources, company managers were told over the past few days that they should identify problems with employee work performance as part of an effort at laying off approximately 20,000 employees.

Twenty thousand employees is equivalent to 6% of Amazon's 1.5 million-strong workforce, which includes hourly workers and the global distribution center.

According to company contracts, employees will be given a 24-hour notice and severance payment.
